Lysbüchel Süd Area
Stiftung Habitat Feasibility Study

A key element of the overall Lysbüchel Süd project is the conversion of a wine storehouse. The big challenge is to enable a closed-off warehouse building, i.e., a mute figure and non-public structure that has been isolated from the city for security reasons, to become a lively part of the city. The existing powerful structure of the concrete frame construction becomes the carrier of the façade's appearance. Setting the pace is the existing building substance, which also casts an effect upon new wooden structures and is decisive for the overall impression of the project. The existing frame structure – as well as the new wooden construction – is not clad from the outside, but rather the structure is built up from the inside: remaining visible, it creates a distinct identity
Student housing is accommodated on the ground floor with direct access from the outside and to the south. Featuring light-flooded spaces with ceiling heights of approx. 3.80m, the existing structure on the first floor is being developed with cluster apartments. On the second to fifth upper floors in the new stories made of wood added on top of the existing structure, there will be a total of fifty-five 1.5–4.5 apartments with joker rooms. This wide range is complemented by a continuous second attic that is accessible from both stairwells and houses the laundry rooms, shared or common spaces, and covered and open terraces. On this roof terrace, communal life will not only take place in summer, but here there are also communal zones for working, and above all, this is where the mutual life of the inhabitants will be able to develop.
