The KBB Kölner Baumwollquartier is a former cotton factory compound in Cologne-Mülheim, whose protected historic building substance with industrial halls, boiler building, tall chimney, and small-scale buildings is to be augmented by seven new buildings providing a total of 250 apartments. For the new seven buildings, which are precisely aligned blocks (positioned parallel to one another) and variously articulated in terms of their height, depth and length, the development plan borrows from the structure of the existing urban fabric. Likewise, the materialization in clinker brick refers to the character of the existing buildings. Previously fenced-off and thereby existing as a cut-off island, through the skillful placement of the volumes as well as the definition of open space, the site will be connected with the surroundings and can emerge as a new high quality district of the city with a strong individual identity.
