The administrative building of the Justice Departement of Basel-Stadt at Spiegelgasse 12 (dating from 1937) needed to be made handicapped accessible. The main intervention consisted of placing a lifting platform in the fly brake and replacing the elevators by the main staircase. Monument conservation aspects played a key role in the project and the architectural intervention focussed on two main goals: to veil the technical air of the lifting platform and to tie the new elements to the existing ones. Therefore the lifiting platform was modeled to the liking of a lantern stele, blending in next to the entrance steps and veiled with multilayer metal mesh. The delicate metal detail and the adaptation of the granite steps refer to the existing main staircase and engages in a dialogue between the old and the new.
