Client: Canton of Basel-Stadt

By the addition of an exterior ramp and an elevator, Clara School House was made accessible for the physically challenged. Monument conservation aspects played a key role in the project, leading to the inconspicuous placing of the elevator in a remote corner of the building. The new aluminium facade made of twisting bands veils the elevator like a soft textile and reflects the lattice that can already be found on the building. The unobstrusive ramp emerging from the outdoor ground allows for a smooth and unobstructed access to the building. Built in black concrete the ramp mirrors the adjacent steps of the public passage between the schoolyard and St. Clara church.
