New building Sandgrube School, Basel

The Sandgruben plot and the already existing school grounds surround the historical Sandgruben Villa. The new building expands the continuous row of houses along Schwarzwaldallee and screens the rest of the plot from the busy street to the north. The stepped structure ebbs away towards the inside of the plot and the sports grounds. The „New School“ demands new typologies for the new learning environments: „The classroom’s dead, long live the learning landscape!“ a slogan that has to be understood in its comprehensive meaning. The urban figure of stepped rows superimposed on the gymnasium form a fantastic foundation for the development of a laid back typology with hall-like corridors and cascading stairwells that aren’t bound to fire regulations and therefore are at the unrestricted disposal of the pupils and the teaching staff.
