The urbanistic concept of this project is shaped by the specific topography of the site–that was formed during the ice age–and an existing architecture full of character. Oriented in response to the entry to Waldighoferstrasse, the appearance of the two-part building composition, despite common attributes, is articulated differently on all four sides. Distinct deep staggering of the volumes divides the building and through its simple, clear singularity, enables the overall composition to become part of the surrounding urban fabric, which is defined by other cooperative buildings. The two parts of the new residential complex are finished with differently colored plaster, whereby the chromaticity entailing the complementary colors of red and green strengthens the volumetric effect. Last, but not least, through its various architectural references the new residential complex is a contemporary contribution to the rich tradition of cooperative building in Basel.
