An existing printing works building in the city center– consisting of a production hall and office wing–has been converted into a residential complex. Determined by the former use, the industrial character of the building substance becomes a major springboard for the design concept, carrying over a sense of the history of the building into the new function. The straightforward-nature of the supporting structure, mushroom columns, ribbed ceilings, and special features such as the steel construction of the shed roof have been supplemented with a few new elements and materials. Incorporating these distinctive qualities, nine loft apartments have been inserted into the volume of the pre-existing building substance.
