The new residence of the Swiss ambassador in Algeria is part of an existing generous garden. The program includes the private rooms of the family of the ambassador on the upper floors, while the representative rooms are located on the entrance level. The precisely inserted courtyard building mediates between the surrounding scales, giving the new volume a clear and perceivable identity. The building is carefully inserted into the existing topography, thereby minimizing any necessary excavation.
The building measures approx.18 x 22 m. On the ground and the upper floors the spatial development is chamber-like and houses the various specified program elements. Various courtyards complement the required facilities and form extremely interesting and multifunctional interior, in between, and outdoor spaces. The rooms have been designed with different heights, in particular to accentuate the stature of the representative rooms.
