Architecture is only a supporting actor in Zoo Basel. The star role belongs to the animals in their compounds that emulate their natural habitats. The only exception is the restaurant and its distinctive and somewhat alien architecture. Its outlandish form is fascinating and has most problably saved the building from demolition on several occasions. A new glittering and translucid light roof spans a surprising pedestal and reveals the Zolli Restaurant in a different light. The formal language is unfamiliar and might appear slightly exotic, but it is distinctive and embodies its own identity. The existing spatial structure of the restaurant is brought up to date by modest means creating architectural, operational and economical value.
